Do I need all of this for filming?

“I don’t have the right equipment to film”, “I need a new camera”, “I need the best steady cam” or “even my tripod hasn’t got a fluid head!” These are some of the questions that may come up in your head when you start to take filming a little seriously. but guess what! None of the above are needed…well except the camera.

I have been asked many times “Hey! you must have lots of expensive equipment to do filming” my answer is always the same…NO!

I don’t have tonnes of expensive camera equipment(as much as I want to), not even a proper working slider but yet I can go out and film something that I am proud off. I believe that by having less you are able to explore more and challenge yourself more to create something different and innovative. Always remember that the most important thing about filming is the person behind the camera, YOU!

All you need to create a short is an idea, passion and a camera. That’s it. Maybe add a mic to the list as well. Then you can go out and film, don’t let anything hold you back, no place is too old, no place is too far and no place is definitely boring.

From my experience I think you need to focus on five main things;

  1. Composition
  2. Symmetry / Asymmetry
  3. Energy
  4. Depth
  5. Perspective

Each one of the above combined with your creative flair and ad hoc filming gear can create the best short out there! It takes time to clean out your techniques and feeling brave to play around with different perspectives but once you grasp the vision you are all set to go.

More great insights to come including how to film interviews and how to approach the planning phase for a filming session.

Exciting times ahead!
